Why did you decide to begin teaching the language of success?

After 25 years in corporate America in influential roles in major companies like IBM, D&B, BCBS, VNA, I realized that my mission is to help others learn from my extensive experience so they can achieve the success they deserve. I want to help corporate America evolve from a place where people perform for a paycheck to an environment where team members create a culture of collective achievements.

Clearly you have extensive experience. Please share with us your professional expertise.

My practical knowledge is a complement to my education and expertise – 25 years corporate experience, two advanced degrees [MBA, MA], graduate of several leadership programs, certified training facilitator and adjunct faculty member, and few years as a private consultant and trainer.    One of my favorite professional commendations was when I was chosen to do Total Quality Management training for small businesses. The President of Howell Electric informed me that his average employee was 50 years old, hadn’t gone past secondary school, and wasn’t  English-speaking, yet he needed to communicate complicated systems to these people. I illustrated the entire concept in simple terms using the onion-ring making process.  My presentation was such a well received success. For me, communication success stories like this is what keeps me inspired.

This brings up a sensitive subject. You are from India, yet your English is impeccable. In fact, I would characterize it as conversational rather than “textbook”. How have you bridged from learning the language to living it?

Mala Subramaniam

Since kindergarten my schooling was in British run schools where proper language skills were emphasized. I always had a natural penchant for the way language worked and earned several awards for essay writing throughout my education. But it wasn’t until after my MBA that I really had the opportunity to perfect my communications skills. I began giving multiple presentations each week to high level executives and organizations and was able to deliver my message in a compelling and persuasive manner. Having the opportunity to “workshop” my formal language education in real time has helped make me such a sought after communications expert. And since I have been doing this for so long, I know what it takes to communicate effectively in a range of media – from a live stage to a virtual classroom.

Today, I take my “classic training” and use it to deliver cutting edge presentations. Teaching others to do this effectively has been one of the highlights of my professional career.

…risk more then other’s think is safe
…dream more than others think is practical
